4th Generation Montana Ranchers
Where Our Tallow Comes From
My family has been ranching in the Yellowstone Valley since 1889. As a 4th generation Montana rancher, I grew up learning regenerative practices from my family. We practice holistic grazing on our ranch, rotating our cattle to mimic the grazing patterns of the bison that once roamed these grasslands.
But here's something important: we raise cattle, but we sell them as yearlings to feedlots, not to slaughter weight. That means while we're committed to regenerative ranching practices on our family land, we don't raise the cattle that become our tallow.
Our tallow comes exclusively from a USDA certified organic ranch in Montana's Yellowstone Valley drainage. This is an important distinction. USDA certified organic isn't self-certified. It requires ongoing inspections and compliance checks to maintain certification.
The oils we add to our tallow formulations are also USDA certified organic. The only ingredients in our products that aren't certified organic are our plant-based fragrances, which are all natural but not certified.

Cyclical Living
A Year on the Range
Peak Vitamin A & E
The Green Up
As the Yellowstone Valley thaws, the herd moves to fresh, chlorophyll-rich grasses. This rapid intake of beta-carotene gives our spring tallow its signature golden hue and high Vitamin A content.
High Omega-3 Ratios
Rotational Grazing
We move the cattle daily to mimic ancient bison patterns. This sequester carbon into the soil and ensures the animals are always eating the most nutrient-dense top of the plant.
Dense Stearic Acid
The Harvest
We honor the animal by utilizing every part. The kidney suet (leaf fat) is harvested carefully to preserve the stearic acid structure before the triple-rendering process begins.
Bio-Available CLA
Rest & Rendering
While the land rests under snow, we are in the lab. We micro-aerate the year's harvest in small batches, nitrogen-cooling it to create our signature whip without oxidation.
Traceability
Every jar of Sego Lily can be traced back to the land where the cattle were born and raised. We know the ranchers personally. We know their practices. We know their commitment to regeneration.
This level of traceability is rare in skincare. Most tallow brands can't tell you where their tallow comes from beyond 'grass-fed.' We can tell you the exact ranch, the exact practices, and the exact standards our sourcing partners maintain.
- The cattle are:
- 100% grass-fed and grass-finished (never grain)
- Raised on native Montana grasslands
- Managed using regenerative holistic grazing practices
- USDA certified organic (the ranch, not just the cattle)
- Humanely raised and processed
