I had used an expensive anti-aging facial cream for over 10 years. It was the kind commonly sold in plastic surgery clinics, and I genuinely believed it was working. I thought it was keeping my wrinkles at bay. Then I watched a webinar about grass-fed tallow skincare. Something about it just made sense. The science, the simplicity, and the ancestral wisdom all clicked. So I ordered a bottle, took a before picture, and gave it a try.
I never went back to that expensive cream.
The transformation was shocking. Within weeks I could see a real difference. Fine lines I had been fighting for years started smoothing out. My skin looked healthier and more vibrant. It looked alive. But here is the thing. The farther I got into my chemical-free skincare journey, the more my husband and I noticed something off. We could smell this meaty scent all the time.
Now, most people might not immediately recognize what meat smells like on their skin. But we are ranchers. We know that smell. And while the product was incredibly effective, that turnoff was real.
So I went to work in my Montana workshop.

Solving the "Tallow Smell"
I was not going to dilute the tallow. That was non-negotiable. The nutrient density, the bio-identical fatty acids, and the fat-soluble vitamins are what make tallow work. Watering it down or mixing in cheap fillers would defeat the whole purpose.
But I also was not going to sell a product that made people smell like a butcher shop.
After months of testing, I discovered something most tallow brands still have not figured out. Essential oils are not the answer. Most essential oils are made with alcohol which dissipates on the skin. That is why people using essential oil-based tallow products still end up smelling like meat once the fragrance burns off.
The solution was plant-based fragrances. We use pure botanical extracts, absolutes, and aromatic isolates derived from raw plant sources. These create long-lasting and luxurious scents that completely eliminate any animal smell while staying true to our non-toxic ethos.
When I finally perfected the formulation, I knew I had something special. Sego Lily was born.
Who I Am
I am Holly Stoltz, a 4th generation Montana rancher. I grew up on a dairy in Paradise Valley between Livingston and Yellowstone National Park. Throughout my professional career I have been involved in agriculture. But it was not until recently that I learned of a different and ultimately better way to steward the land and livestock.
The old adage of "We do what we do because that's how my dad did it" was a tough nut to crack. But since learning about regenerative agriculture, my husband Trent and I have shifted our paradigms from taking from the land to giving back.
We have three grown children. Our eldest son is back on the ranch as the 5th generation while our daughter lives just 15 minutes away and our youngest son is spreading his wings in Texas.
